About this course
Postpartum depression is the most common complication of childbirth, yet it remains widely misunderstood, underreported, and undertreated. The gap between what people expect new parenthood to feel like and what they actually experience when PPD is present — and the shame that gap can generate — is one of the primary reasons that so many people struggle in silence for longer than necessary.
By the end of this course you will be able to identify the signs and symptoms of postpartum depression, explain how it differs from the baby blues and other postpartum mood experiences, describe the known risk factors and protective factors, and explain the screening tools and professional evaluation processes most commonly used.
What you will learn:
- The diagnostic criteria and symptom range of postpartum depression, including the presentations that are frequently missed: irritability, rage, and anxiety as primary features rather than sadness
- How postpartum depression differs from baby blues in duration, intensity, and functional impairment — and why the distinction matters for help-seeking
- The biological, psychological, social, and situational risk factors associated with PPD, including prior mental health history, traumatic birth experience, inadequate social support, and relationship stress
- The protective factors that reduce PPD risk and how they can be cultivated proactively during pregnancy and the early postpartum period
- The Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale and other common screening tools: what they measure, how they are used, and what a positive screen means and does not mean
- How postpartum depression presents differently across diverse populations, including fathers and non-birthing parents, people from different cultural backgrounds, and parents of multiples or NICU babies
- The evidence-based treatment options for PPD, including psychotherapy, medication, and combined approaches
- The process of seeking evaluation: who to call, what to expect at an initial appointment, and how to describe your symptoms accurately to a provider you may not know well
This course is organized into four sections: clinical understanding of PPD, risk and protective factors, screening and evaluation, and treatment overview. Each section uses clear explanatory text, annotated case vignettes, and reflection prompts. A self-assessment exercise at the close of the course helps you identify whether and how the material applies to your own situation and what your next step should be.
This course is designed for new and expectant parents, their partners, and family members who want a clear, grounded understanding of postpartum depression. No prior background in psychology or medicine is required. This course is informational and educational and does not provide diagnosis or treatment. If you believe you or someone you care for may be experiencing postpartum depression, please contact a licensed healthcare or mental health professional. In the United States, Postpartum Support International (1-800-944-4773) provides referrals to specialized care.
