Grief Support Skills in Practice: Listening, Presence, and Companioning the Bereaved
Develop practical skills for accompanying grieving people through structured case scenarios, conversation frameworks, and reflection tools that build presence, attunement, and appropriate response.
About this course
Knowing the theory of grief does not automatically translate into knowing what to say โ or, more importantly, when to say nothing at all. The skill of grief accompaniment is built through guided practice: learning to listen without steering, to tolerate another person's pain without rushing to fix it, and to offer presence that communicates genuine care without projection. This course develops those practical skills through structured case work and disciplined reflection.
By the end of this course you will be able to demonstrate active listening and empathic reflection in a grief support conversation, identify and avoid the most common unhelpful responses to bereaved people, respond appropriately to grief expressions including anger, guilt, and relief without pathologizing them, and construct a structured first-meeting framework for a bereavement support visit.
What you will learn:
- The companioning model (Alan Wolfelt): the caregiver as witness rather than expert or fixer
- Empathic reflection: how to reflect back what you are hearing without evaluation or redirection
- Common unhelpful responses and why they fail: silver linings, comparisons, time promises
- Responding to anger, guilt, and complicated emotion in grief without defensiveness
- Supporting bereaved children and adolescents: age-appropriate responses and what to avoid
- Grief and religious meaning-making: when faith is a resource and when it creates its own grief
- The first meeting: a structured framework for opening a bereavement support relationship
- Setting boundaries and recognizing limits: when companioning alone is insufficient
The course provides eight structured case scenarios representing different grieving people, loss types, and relationship contexts. Each scenario includes a detailed narrative, a structured conversation analysis worksheet, and guidance questions. After completing your analysis, annotated worked examples model skilled response to the same scenario. Between cases, short conceptual readings provide the background needed to engage unfamiliar situations. Reflection prompts throughout encourage honest examination of your own responses to grief and loss. This course is educational and does not qualify you as a professional grief counselor or therapist; clients experiencing prolonged, severe, or complicated grief should be supported in accessing professional mental health care.
This course is written for hospice volunteers, chaplains, parish nurses, faith community support workers, and compassionate laypeople who accompany grieving friends, family members, or community members. It is suitable for those new to intentional grief companioning. No professional credentials are required.
