Understanding Jealousy and Compersion in Non-Monogamous Relationships
Build a clear psychological understanding of how jealousy works — its roots, its functions, and what research tells us about it — alongside an introduction to compersion as a learnable alternative response.
About this course
Jealousy is one of the most common challenges people encounter in non-monogamous relationships, and also one of the least understood. Often treated as a fixed character trait or a sign of incompatibility, jealousy is in fact a complex emotional response with identifiable triggers, cognitive components, and somatic patterns — and research suggests it is far more malleable than most people believe. Alongside jealousy, compersion — the experience of joy in a partner's happiness with another — represents a genuine alternative response that many people in non-monogamous relationships describe developing over time.
By the end of this course you will be able to describe the psychological mechanisms underlying jealousy, distinguish jealousy from related emotions such as envy and insecurity, and explain what compersion is and the conditions under which it tends to develop.
What you will learn:
- The psychology of jealousy: its evolutionary origins, its cognitive and emotional components, and why it is triggered in non-monogamous contexts
- Jealousy versus envy versus insecurity: distinguishing related but distinct emotional states and understanding what each is actually responding to
- Attachment theory and jealousy: how anxious, avoidant, and secure attachment styles manifest in non-monogamous jealousy patterns
- The role of core beliefs and self-worth in jealousy responses: how thoughts like 'I am not enough' or 'I will be abandoned' fuel emotional intensity
- What research on people in established non-monogamous relationships shows about jealousy management over time
- Compersion defined: the history of the concept, its relationship to empathy and loving-kindness, and how it differs from simply suppressing jealousy
- The developmental path toward compersion: how it tends to emerge in practice, what conditions support it, and what blocks it
- Emotional regulation as the foundation: why the ability to tolerate difficult emotions is the prerequisite for both managing jealousy and cultivating compersion
This course works through research-informed readings on jealousy psychology, attachment, and emotional development, paired with reflection prompts that help you map the concepts onto your own emotional experience. Case examples from non-monogamous people at different stages of working with jealousy illustrate the range of experiences and trajectories. A self-assessment worksheet at the end maps your own jealousy patterns and compersion potential.
This course is suitable for anyone in or considering a non-monogamous relationship who wants to understand jealousy and compersion before attempting to work with them in practice. No prior background in psychology is required.
