Queer Non-Monogamy Over Time: Navigating Complexity and Change
Examine the long-term arc of ethical non-monogamy in queer lives — how structures evolve, how people adapt, and how to sustain healthy multi-partner connections across changing circumstances.
About this course
After the initial excitement of entering an ethical non-monogamous arrangement, most people encounter a more complex reality: agreements need renegotiating, new partners disrupt established dynamics, individual identities continue to evolve, and the external world — family, work, community — does not always make space for chosen relationship structures. This applied course examines non-monogamy as a long-term relational practice rather than a fixed arrangement.
By the end of this course you will be able to identify the developmental phases common in long-term non-monogamous relationships, apply renegotiation frameworks when circumstances change, recognise signs of relational burnout and practise recovery, and articulate a personal long-term vision for your relationship structure.
What you will learn:
- How non-monogamous arrangements typically evolve over 1, 3, and 5-plus years — common inflection points drawn from case studies
- Renegotiation frameworks: when and how to revisit relationship agreements without it feeling like a crisis
- How individual identity change — including gender identity and sexual orientation evolution — affects non-monogamous arrangements
- Managing relationship hierarchy and non-hierarchy over time as people's needs and connections shift
- Recognising and recovering from relationship burnout in multi-partner contexts
- Navigating major life transitions — parenthood, career change, illness, loss — across a non-monogamous network
- Community and peer support: the role of queer non-monogamous communities in sustaining individual relationships
- Building a personal long-term relationship structure vision using a guided self-assessment framework
This course uses annotated case narratives to illustrate each phase and challenge, paired with analytical frameworks and personal reflection prompts. The cumulative work is a long-term relationship structure review: a document you can return to and revise as your life and relationships continue to develop.
This course is designed for queer individuals with some experience of non-monogamy who want to think more strategically about the long-term practice of it. It is also suitable for those who have left non-monogamous arrangements and want to understand what happened and what they would do differently. No specific prior coursework is required.
