Advanced Conversation: Navigating Difficult Topics, Social Dynamics, and Deepening Long-Term Connections
Apply conversation skills to challenging real-world contexts — emotionally loaded topics, asymmetric social dynamics, and the sustained dialogue that deepens meaningful long-term relationships.
About this course
Basic conversation skills get you through most ordinary social exchanges. But the conversations that actually matter — navigating a serious disagreement, engaging with someone whose worldview differs sharply from yours, or deepening an important relationship — require a more sophisticated level of skill. This course addresses the demanding applications of conversation: when the emotional stakes are high, the social dynamics are complex, or the relationship requires the kind of sustained dialogue that builds genuine intimacy over time.
By the end of this course you will be able to navigate a conversation about a sensitive or emotionally charged topic without derailing into defensiveness or withdrawal, engage productively across significant difference in values or experience, hold space for another person's distress without either minimizing or being overwhelmed, use conversation deliberately to deepen important long-term relationships, and recognize and repair a conversation that has gone off track.
What you will learn:
- Frameworks for navigating conversations about emotionally difficult topics: grief, conflict, criticism, and political or values-based difference
- The distinction between holding space and fixing: what emotionally supportive listening actually sounds like versus well-intentioned but unhelpful responses
- How to stay curious rather than reactive when a conversation challenges your own perspective or identity
- Dialogue across difference: the conversational conditions that make genuine exchange possible and what typically shuts them down
- The deliberate vulnerability that deepens long-term friendships: how intimacy grows through gradual mutual self-disclosure over many exchanges
- Conversation repair: how to acknowledge that a conversation went poorly and re-engage with a different approach
- Managing your own emotional reactivity in high-stakes dialogue: practical self-regulation techniques for conversational use
- Long-horizon dialogue practices: the question-asking and check-in habits that keep important relationships growing over years
The course takes a case-study-intensive approach, presenting detailed conversation transcripts from realistic scenarios — a friend sharing serious news, a conversation with someone across a political divide, a long-term friend where the relationship has grown formulaic — and analyzing what is working, what is not, and how the conversation could have proceeded differently. Reflection prompts ask you to apply each framework to a real relationship or conversation in your own life. The final section focuses on building intentional conversation practices for your most important relationships.
This course is designed for adults who have a working foundation in basic conversation skills and want to extend those skills to more demanding contexts — prior familiarity with active listening and question techniques is helpful but not required. It is suitable for anyone who wants their most important conversations to work better and their closest relationships to go deeper. This course is educational in nature and does not substitute for therapy or counseling.
