Labor Stages in Practice: Tracking, Responding, and Preparing for Each Phase
Use contraction-timing guides, phase-recognition checklists, and partner response worksheets to recognize where you are in labor and respond effectively at each stage.
About this course
Knowing the stages of labor intellectually does not automatically translate into recognizing them in the moment or knowing what to do as each phase unfolds. The practical skills โ timing contractions, recognizing transition, knowing when to go to the hospital, understanding what your partner should focus on at each stage โ require a different kind of preparation.
By the end of this course you will be able to time and interpret contractions using a structured log, use a phase-recognition checklist to identify where in labor you are, apply the 5-1-1 rule and its variants for hospital admission timing, brief your birth partner on their phase-specific role, and prepare your home and bag for each labor phase.
What you will learn:
- How to use the contraction timing log to record frequency, duration, and intensity, and how to interpret the patterns that indicate phase transitions
- The 5-1-1 rule (contractions five minutes apart, lasting one minute, for one hour) and the circumstances in which you should go to the hospital earlier
- A phase-recognition checklist that compiles the physical, behavioral, and emotional signals characteristic of each labor phase
- How to use the early labor activity guide to manage the latent phase productively at home โ conserving energy, staying hydrated, and managing anxiety
- A partner response worksheet detailing the most useful support interventions at each phase: positional guidance in early labor, counter-pressure and focus anchors in active labor, direction and encouragement in pushing
- How to recognize the signs of transition โ the phase of greatest intensity โ and the comfort strategies most effective at that point
- How to prepare your hospital bag and home environment for a prolonged early labor before departure
- A post-birth reflection worksheet to record how labor actually progressed and what you learned for any future birth
The course is structured around the labor timeline, with each phase having its own practical section containing a reference card, a worksheet, and a worked example. The contraction timing log template is introduced early and referenced throughout. The partner response worksheet consolidates phase-by-phase guidance in a format designed for quick reference during labor itself.
This course is designed for expecting parents in the third trimester and their birth partners who want actionable preparation for each phase of labor. No prior birth preparation is required, though some familiarity with the basic stages is helpful. Please discuss your specific situation and hospital's admission criteria with your care provider.
