Supporting a Parent Through the Final Stages: Care, Communication, and Self-Care
Apply practical care, communication, and self-care strategies through the final stages of a parent's life and into early bereavement.
About this course
The final stages of a parent's life ask more of you than information can prepare you for. They require sustained care, honest communication, and the discipline to keep yourself functional through it. This applied course addresses the long arc, from the move into hospice through early bereavement.
By the end of this course you will be able to provide and coordinate care through the final weeks, communicate with family and clinicians under pressure, recognize and respond to your own grief and exhaustion, and step into the practical and emotional work that follows the death.
What you will learn:
- How to read the signs of approaching death and what to expect across the final days
- How to manage symptoms such as pain, agitation, and breathing changes with the hospice team
- How to handle being present at the bedside without burning out
- How to communicate with siblings and other relatives across distance and disagreement
- How to honor cultural, spiritual, and personal wishes through the dying process
- How to handle the practical hours and first days after death including notifications and arrangements
- How to recognize anticipatory and acute grief and protect basic self-care
The course is structured around six applied modules. Each produces a written artifact: a daily care rhythm, a communication plan, a self-care plan, a sibling coordination document, a post-death checklist, and an early bereavement plan.
This course is written for adult children whose parent is in late-stage illness or active dying, and for those preparing for that phase. By the end you will not have made the experience easier, because it cannot be, but you will move through it with structure, honest communication, and a plan that does not let small but important things fall through the cracks.
