About this course
When a postpartum mood or anxiety disorder is significant enough to warrant treatment, medication is often part of the conversation โ and it is often a conversation that new parents feel unprepared to have. Questions about which medications are used, how they work, whether they are safe while breastfeeding, and how to work productively with a prescribing provider are all reasonable ones, and having baseline knowledge before the appointment makes the discussion more productive.
By the end of this course you will be able to describe how medication is evaluated as a treatment option for postpartum mood and anxiety disorders, explain the general principles used to assess safety during breastfeeding, and articulate the questions that help you have an informed conversation with a prescribing provider.
What you will learn:
- The categories of medication most commonly used for postpartum depression and anxiety, including how they work and what class of drugs each belongs to
- How the benefit-risk framework is applied when considering psychiatric medication for a breastfeeding or postpartum parent
- How medication safety during breastfeeding is evaluated, including the factors that influence how much of a medication is transmitted through breast milk
- The general timeline for when medications begin to take effect and what to expect in the early weeks of treatment
- How medication is typically used in combination with therapy, and why the combination is often more effective than either alone
- The shared decision-making process that characterizes good psychiatric prescribing, including what a thorough evaluation looks like and what your role in the conversation is
- The common concerns that postpartum parents express about medication โ fear of dependency, stigma, worry about infant exposure โ and what the evidence says about each
- How to prepare for an appointment with a prescribing provider, including the history and symptoms you will be asked to describe
This course is organized into three sections: how psychiatric medications work, breastfeeding safety considerations, and the treatment decision process. Each section uses clear, jargon-minimal explanatory text, annotated case examples, and reflection prompts. A self-assessment exercise at the close of the course helps you identify which questions are most important for you to bring to your own provider appointment.
This course is designed for postpartum parents who are considering or have been prescribed medication for a mood or anxiety disorder, as well as their partners and family members who want to understand the treatment landscape. No prior background in pharmacology or psychiatry is required. This course is informational and educational and is not a substitute for the individualized evaluation, diagnosis, and prescribing of a licensed psychiatric or medical provider. All medication decisions must be made in consultation with your qualified healthcare provider.
