About this course

The baby blues sit at one end of a spectrum of postpartum emotional experiences. Understanding that spectrum — where common adjustment ends and a clinical condition begins, how different presentations overlap, and what factors increase vulnerability — helps parents, partners, and support people respond more accurately to whatever they encounter after birth. By the end of this course you will be able to map the full spectrum of perinatal mood experiences from normal adjustment through clinical mood disorders, explain the risk factors associated with more severe postpartum presentations, and describe the pathways from initial symptoms to appropriate evaluation and support. What you will learn: - How the postpartum emotional spectrum is conceptualized, from the universal adjustment responses of the early days through perinatal mood and anxiety disorders - How baby blues, postpartum depression, postpartum anxiety, and postpartum OCD are distinguished from one another in symptom profile, timeline, and clinical significance - The risk factors — biological, psychological, social, and situational — that are associated with a more challenging postpartum emotional trajectory - How protective factors, including social support, prior mental health history, and prepared expectations, interact with risk factors in shaping individual experiences - How the postpartum emotional experience can differ across diverse populations, including parents with prior mental health diagnoses, adoptive parents, parents of NICU babies, and parents who experienced pregnancy loss before this birth - How to have a meaningful perinatal mental health conversation with a provider, including what screening tools are typically used and what they are designed to detect - How partners and support people can monitor the full spectrum without being alarmist, and when their concern should prompt them to gently suggest professional support - What the evidence says about the most effective early interventions for perinatal mood difficulties, and how to find appropriate support in your community This course is organized around the spectrum model, moving from the universal experience of postpartum emotional adjustment through increasingly complex presentations. Each section uses annotated case vignettes that illustrate the distinction between one presentation and the next. Reflection prompts ask you to consider your own risk and protective factors and to think about what kind of support you would want if you found yourself at different points on the spectrum. A resource guide section provides guidance on how to identify and evaluate professional support options. This course is designed for expectant and new parents who want a broader understanding of the postpartum emotional landscape, as well as partners, family members, doulas, and childbirth educators who want to be better prepared to recognize and respond to a range of presentations. No prior background in mental health or medicine is required. This course is educational and does not substitute for individualized clinical evaluation. If you are concerned about your mood or a loved one's mood after birth, please reach out to a licensed perinatal mental health professional.
